Each principle (except Fire Prevention) has its genesis in corresponding techniques of product pakaging for shipment. The typical television, for example, is packed in heavy corrugated cardboard box, which is held closed with adhesives and staples. Also, the TV is surrounded by molded Styrofoam. Therefore, the cardboard box (and to some extend, the Styrofoam) prevents ejection, maintains survival space and controls impact energy. The Styrofoam is primarily designed to provide restraint and padding. To provide adequate crashworthiness in a motor vehicle accident, the vehicle's safety systems must work together as a system. If even one system fails, the risk of injury or death is increased. This paper will address each issue of these five crashworthiness principles. Many of the other speakers will address these issues as well in much more detail than I have attempted in this paper.
